Denmark - Constitution Day
June 5 is Constitution Day in Denmark. This holiday is not much observed, as in other countries. The shops and other institutions are usually closed and people enjoy warm weather and listen to political debates and speeches on the state of the government.
The first constitution of Denmark was signed by the King of Denmark Frederick VII on June 5, 1849. This event marked the transition of the country from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy. Since then the constitution of Denmark was rewritten four times. The changes were made in 1866, 1915, 1920 and 1953. Current constitution of Denmark was adopted on June 5, 1953.
Iran - Khordad Movement Anniversary
The 1963 Khordad movement was a very important event in the history of Iran. It rose as a protest against Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini imprisonment and lasted for 2 days. Nowadays Iran annually observes Khordad Movement Anniversary (15 Khordad) on June 5.
Ruhollah Khomeini was a political and religious leader in Iran. He opposed the Shah and criticized the USA and Israel. He was arrested for several times and exiled from the country. One of the arrests, that took place on the 15th day of Khordad month (Iranian calendar), caused a massive protest by Iranians.
Seychelles - Liberation Day
Liberation Day is annually observed in Seychelles on June 5. This holiday celebrates the events of June 1977, when current head of the state was overthrown by a revolt.
Seychelles gained independence from Britain in 1976 and became a republic within the Commonwealth. James Mancham became the first President of the republic, however, his presidency didn't last for a long time.
