07JUN2019 - NEWS - Orkney ferry to run on renewable energy while docked under fuel-saving plan

NorthLink vessel to cut carbon footprint and use 500 tonnes less fuel a year
An energy management firm is to cut an Orkney ferry's fuel consumption by 500 tonnes a year by effectively plugging it in while in dock.
Schneider Electric will supply locally produced renewable electricity to the MV Hamnavoe NorthLink ferry while it is docked in Stromness using 'cold ironing'. This will cut the overnight carbon footprint of the vessel’s diesel generators and engines.
It is believed to be the first large commercial ship to shore connection in the UK and part of a low carbon travel and transport project for the island town.
