Indonesia - Independence Day
Independence Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. This is one of the major public holidays for every nation, that gained independence from other country. For instance, Indonesia celebrates its Independence Day on August 17.
The first Europeans appeared in Indonesia in the 16th century, when the Portuguese traders sought the way of monopolization of the sources of nutmeg, cloves and cubeb pepper. The Dutch and British traders followed them, but only the Dutch could become a dominant European power and established the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia. When the company dissolved in 1800, the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies as a nationalized colony.
