In a first for the Swedish port of Södertälje, 7,500-m3 LNG bunker vessel Kairos has conducted an LNG bunker supply operation for product tanker Ternsund, chartered by Finnish fuel supply company North European Oil Trade (NEOT)

During the operation, 150 tonnes of LNG were bunkered from Kairos to Ternsund at the port’s oil terminal.

Port of Södertälje controller Åsa Boström said, “Establishing alternative fuels in the port fits perfectly well into our overall strategy to minimise environmental impact and emissions.”

The bunkering operation in the port of Södertälje was also the first in the Baltic Sea while normal cargo was unloaded in parallel (SIMOPS), making the operation more efficient and similar to traditional heavy fuel oil or marine gasoil refuelling operations.

Nauticor LNG portfolio director Sonja Neßhöver called the SIMOPS LNG bunker operation at an oil terminal “an important milestone for the development of the LNG supply infrastructure.”
