19APR2018 - Holiday Today - Iceland, Uruguay, Venezuela
Iceland - First Day of Summer
The First Day of Summer (Sumardagurinn fyrsti) is a public holiday in Iceland celebrated on the first Thursday after April 18.
It might seem strange that the Icelanders celebrate the coming of summer in late April, when the weather in Iceland is typically not summer-like at all. The choice of the date is explained by the fact that it is a vestige of the traditional Icelandic calendar.
Uruguay - Landing of the 33 Patriots Day
On April 19, Uruguay celebrates the anniversary of the Landing of the 33 Patriots, which marks the beginning of the country's struggle for independence. It was the 33 patriots, also known as the 33 Orientals, that sparked this struggle.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the territory of modern Uruguay became part of the Empire of Brazil. Then it was known as Oriental Province, or Banda Oriental. Uruguayan patriots continued the struggle for independence started by José Gervasio Artigas, who was exiled to Paraguay in 1820.
Venezuela - Beginning of the Independence Movement Day
On April 19, Venezuela celebrates Beginning of the Independence Movement Day, also known as 19th April Day (Diez y nyeve de abril). On this date in 1810, the struggle for the country's independence began.
The first Spanish settlement in Venezuela was established in 1522. In the early 19th century, Spanish colonies in America began to fight against the Spanish Empire, hoping to gain independence. Venezuela was no exception.
