Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava, is an annual Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess Durga. It is an official public holiday in Bangladesh. Besides, the festival is widely celebrated in Nepal (where it is known as Dashain) and several states of India.
Durga is one of the most popular Hindu deities. She is the principal form of the Mother Goddess, also known as Shakti or Devi. The festival of Durga Puja commemorates the victory of Durga over Mahishasura, an evil buffalo demon. Thus, the holiday symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
