The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to accelerate greenhouse gas reduction requirements for new ships. Its Marine Environment Protection Committee met in London last week. It decided that Phase 3 of its Energy Efficiency Design Index will go ahead from 2022, requiring newly-built container ships to be 50% more efficient than a baseline figure, compared to 30% by 2025. Carriers of bulk cargo and liquefied natural gas, alongside diesel-electric cruise ships will have a 30% target. However, these requirements are already exceeded by some ships.
