Seychelles - Independence Day
The Republic of Seychelles annually celebrates Independence Day on June 29. This holiday celebrates the day, when Seychelles gained independence from Great Britain.
The first Europeans who set foot on Seychelles were the Portuguese, however, since the mid of the 1700s the islands were controlled by the French. The British contested control over the islands in the beginning of the 1800s. At that time the islands were administered by Mauritius, that was ruled by France. After the fall of Mauritius in 1903 Seychelles became a colony of Great Britain.
