World Leading Global Trading & Shipping Company has an exciting opportunity for a Freight Trading Operator to primarily manage the long-term chartered vessels, ensuring they get from A to B in the most efficient way possible, liaising with freight traders, the ship’s captain and internal and external customers.

In a perfect world, you will have solid experience gained from several years working in a ship-owning company and potentially have some sea-going experience earlier on in your career.

About the Trading and Shipping Company

The Freight Operations team sits within a wider group, Global Operations, which also includes functions covering cargo care, claims & demurrage, commercial advice, contracts and management of the distribution network.

Freight Operators are closely linked with the Global Freight Trading team and are responsible for providing professional freight operations to the freight traders. Freight Operators work closely with the Freight Traders to ensure the smooth and efficient conduct of all oil charters both in and out and are essential in order to optimise the commercial benefits to the oil trading business and the P&L of the global freight trading team.

It is a fast moving and changing environment which forms a good foundation for a career in operations, chartering, supply or oil trading.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all Freight operational activities promptly and professionally
  • Ensure that all obligations under the charter party contract terms are met
  • This refers both to charters internally with oil desks and with third parties
  • Ensure the efficient operation of time chartered vessels
  • Issuing voyage orders, the correct preparation of cargo tanks and the issuance of LOIs
  • Ensure that bunker procurement is optimised in terms of location and cost
  • Work closely with Freight traders in a fast-moving, global environment
  • Ensure that agency appointments are made promptly
  • Inform agents and masters of Charter party or Worldscale recoverable costs
  • Use in-house tools for managing ship operations and records
  • Liaise with ship-to-ship and third party time charter (TC) ship owners regarding ship issues
  • Help with SIRE inspections, crewing, maintenance and dry-docking schedules
  • Co-ordinate with finance re: settlement items (system reconciliations, billing to third parties)
  • Support Freight Trading Strategy both for term and spot ship trade activities
  • Identify and maximize the embedded optionality within charter party agreements
  • Liaise with Oil operators to ensure smooth operations to avoid supply disruption
  • Secure information regarding controlled and chartered ship positions
  • Assisting with Ship scheduling in a constantly changing environment
  • Obtain vetting and port clearances of spot ships and other spot charter administration
  • Work closely with the Freight traders in ship profitability analysis

Knowledge and experience of Freight operations is preferred alongside the following:-

  • Handling the commercial aspects of trades / commercial deals and logistics
  • Troubleshoot existing process issues / proactive in continuous improvement
  • Experience in managing complex multi-stakeholder needs
  • Ability to analyse and simplify complex problems
  • Experience in cross-function, cross-business, multinational and cross-cultural teams
  • Fluency in English is essential. Additional language skills are an advantage.

This needs combining with a positive attitude and an ability to work within a large, globally dispersed project team in a multi-cultural environment. You also need to be a self-starter, a logical thinker and a quick learner, with strong initiative and excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, able to write clearly and concisely.
