The Gulf Coast led by Texas officially became a net exporter of crude oil late last year, even though the nation as a whole still takes in more oil than it ships out. According to the US Energy Department, Gulf Coast crude exports surged to a record of 2.3 million barrels a day in December - with nearly 2 million barrels just from Texas - while the Gulf region imported a 32-year low of just less than 2 million barrels daily.
