25APR2019 - NEWS - Hapag-Lloyd is on track to achieve its target of a 20% reduction in fuel consumption by 2020

Hapag-Lloyd is on track to achieve its target of a 20% reduction in fuel consumption by 2020, when compared to a 2016 ceiling, according to its latest sustainability report.
Jörg Erdmann, senior director of sustainability management, at the carrier, noted that the improvement was due to efficiency measures as well as lowering specific emissions.
Erdmann added: “And we are prepared, as our fleet will operate using compliant fuels by 1 January 2020. In addition, we are testing other options, and Hapag-Lloyd will be the first shipping company to convert a large container ship to climate-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG).”
Like the rest of the shipping industry, Hapag Lloyd is also gearing up for the IMO global fuel regulation, which comes into force at the start of 2020, capping sulphur content in marine fuels from 3.5% to 0.5%.
The shipping line is testing emission-reducing technologies which may present options for a small portion of its fleet, while also installing exhaust gas treatment systems, noted CEO Rolf Habben Jansen.
